I’ve always wanted to begin a column or article with the phrase, “It was a dark and stormy night”, a lead line from the old gothic novels. Wet and rainy would probably be a more apt description of Kings Speedway this past Saturday night. The rain went away and the majority of the loyal Kings fans hung on for a crisp cool night of IMCA racing.

It appeared that Porterville’s Steve Smothermon was on a mission. Smothermon squeezed out a .791 second win over Randy Brown in his heat. In the Modified main, Smothermon continued his run, holding down the number one slot until the ninth lap when Merced’s Marshall Weaver wrestled away the lead, never to be relinquished.

Local favorites, Claudine Contente and Jimmy Reeves finished 5th and 12th respectively.

This night’s lineup of entries had maybe the most collective talent this year. The above talent was joined by the likes of Greg Mancebo, a hot shoe from Tulare, Alex Stanford, Mike Villanueva, Chad Patterson and Paul Stone. These are the folks that pick up the wins wherever they race. The field of 20 race teams put on a great show and did not disappoint the loyal Kings fans.

The IMCA Stocks had a fun night with nine entries. Loren DeArmond wan his heat in a decisive fashion, edging out Hanford’s Brandon Hamilton by 1.33 seconds. Hamilton followed up the second place heat finish with a strong win over second place local, Jon Dias.

This coming Saturday night, you won’t want to miss a power packed show featuring the Bandit 360’s, IMCA Stocks, American Stocks, and the REALLY BIG BOYS, the Super Late Models.

Racing starts at 6:30 PM, come out and enjoy HAPPY HOUR from 5:30-7pm, AND ENJOY THE RACING.
